A casino referral bonus pays you, and usually your friend, when that friend signs up through your link, deposits and places real-money bets. It is almost never cash. The operator pays because it expects your friend to lose more over time than both rewards cost. On 29 Oct 2026 we read four refer-a-friend terms from licensed operators in the UK, Ontario and the US. All four paid in bonus bets, free bets or bonus credit. All four capped how many friends you can refer. All four let the operator void the reward.

Quick take: A refer-a-friend bonus is a customer-acquisition fee paid to you instead of an advertiser, in restricted credit. In our illustrative maths, a RM100 + RM100 reward costs the operator RM200 while the friend’s qualifying RM100 slot bet is expected to lose RM3.50. The rest has to come from your friend’s future losses. Share the link only with someone who already gambles, can afford it, and isn’t trying to stop.

What is a casino referral bonus?

A casino referral bonus (also called a refer-a-friend bonus) is a promotion where an existing player gets a unique link or code. A new player who joins through it and meets the conditions triggers a reward.

Three parties are involved:

  • You (the referrer): get bonus bets, free bets or bonus credit, usually after your friend’s qualifying bet settles.
  • Your friend (the referee): often gets a matching reward, but only after depositing and betting their own money first.
  • The operator: gets a new depositing customer without paying an affiliate or an ad network for them.

It sits alongside the other bonus types we’ve covered, such as no-deposit bonuses and casino loyalty points. The difference is who does the marketing: you.

Takeaway: a referral bonus is a reward for recruiting a paying customer, not a gift for being loyal.

We read 4 licensed refer-a-friend terms: here’s what they say

On 29 Oct 2026 we opened and read the published refer-a-friend terms of four licensed operators: Unibet UK, Caesars Sportsbook & Casino Ontario, BetMGM’s US casino referral and theScore Bet Ontario. We did not sign up or refer anyone. This is what the documents say, not a test.

What stood out:

  • Nobody paid cash. Every reward was a free bet, bonus bet or bonus credit with an expiry date.
  • Your friend pays first. Each scheme needed a real-money deposit and a real-money bet (£10 to $100) before anyone got anything.
  • The small print didn’t always agree with itself. BetMGM’s page offers $100 but its New Jersey section mentions a “$25 Casino Bonus”, and it lists roulette and baccarat as both counting and excluded.
  • Sharing is restricted. Caesars says “Sharing referral links on public social media platforms is prohibited in Ontario,” and only allows links to people you know personally and know to be 21+.

Takeaway: in the four sets of terms we read, a referral bonus meant restricted credit with a short shelf life and a hard cap, not money in your bank.

Who really gets paid? The maths

Here is an illustrative example. The structure mirrors the BetMGM terms ($100 each, friend deposits and wagers $100), but we use RM and invented round numbers. It is not any real operator’s offer.

  • You get RM100 in bonus credit. Your friend gets RM100 in bonus credit. Face value: RM200.
  • Your friend’s qualifying RM100 is played on slots with a 3.5% house edge. Expected loss: RM100 × 3.5% = RM3.50.
  • Gap the operator must recover: RM200 − RM3.50 = RM196.50.
  • Further slot turnover needed to cover it at 3.5%: RM196.50 ÷ 0.035 ≈ RM5,614.
  • At a 1.06% baccarat banker edge (the figure 27 of the 55 live tables in our data list), it would take about RM18,538.

The operator isn’t being generous. It is paying for a customer, the same way it pays affiliates a one-off CPA fee. We explain those deals in how much gambling affiliates earn. A referral scheme moves that fee to you, and pays it in credit that mostly goes straight back onto the tables.

Free bets are worth less than their face value too. Unibet’s free bet stake is “not returned as part of any winnings”. Say you put a £10 free bet on a 3-leg accumulator at Evens per leg, and each leg carries a 5% bookmaker margin. Its expected value is about £7.56, not £10.

Takeaway: if the operator pays RM200 for a friend whose first bet is expected to lose RM3.50, the profit has to come from that friend’s later losses.

What voids a refer-a-friend bonus

This is consumer information, taken from the terms we read. It explains why referral rewards get refused. It is not a guide to getting round the rules.

  1. Your friend didn’t use your link. Caesars: if they register any other way, neither of you gets a bonus.
  2. Your friend isn’t new. Fanatics’ 2024 refer-a-friend rules excluded anyone who had registered an account “in any state”.
  3. The accounts look linked. Unibet’s general terms limit promotions to once per IP address, device, family and residential address. Caesars flags accounts “linked by device/static IP/cashier/location”.
  4. The qualifying bet doesn’t count. Void bets, cashed-out bets and bets made with bonus funds were excluded by Unibet and Caesars.
  5. A deadline passed. Friend deadlines ran from 30 to 90 days, and reward expiry from 7 to 30 days.
  6. Your friend opted out. At BetMGM, if the new member opts out, the existing member’s bonus isn’t credited.
  7. The operator decides it’s abuse. Every set of terms gave the operator discretion to void rewards and winnings.

More on that last point in bonus abuse: 9 reasons casinos void your winnings.

Takeaway: most referral refusals come down to the link, the “new customer” test, linked accounts or a missed deadline.

What regulators say about refer-a-friend offers

Takeaway: in some regulated markets, referral offers are restricted or banned outright. A public “use my link” post can be a breach in itself.

The part the offer page skips: you become the recruiter

A referral scheme asks you to sell gambling to the people closest to you. That cost is real. The Gambling Commission’s 2024 survey found 9.0% of adults in Great Britain were affected by someone else’s gambling in the past 12 months.

In Asia, the informal version is the “agent” who gets people onto illegal betting sites. In a June 2026 operation, the Singapore Police Force investigated 11 people aged 17 to 23. Some were suspected of obtaining accounts on unlicensed platforms for others. One woman allegedly promised payment for every bank account handed over. These are allegations under investigation, not convictions. Police note that acting as an agent for an unlawful betting operation carries a fine of up to S$200,000 and up to seven years’ jail.

Don’t send a link to anyone who:

  • is under the legal age, or whose age you don’t know;
  • has self-excluded, is cutting down, or has asked you not to talk about betting;
  • is in debt or borrowing to gamble.

If that person is you, our guide to blocking gambling covers self-exclusion, bank blocks and app blocks.

Takeaway: the bonus is paid for a customer. Make sure the person you’re “selling” can afford to be one.

60-second refer a friend bonus terms checklist with five questions and the seven things that void a casino referral bonus
Illustration by HotStakes. Based on Unibet UK, Caesars Ontario, BetMGM and theScore Bet terms read 29 Oct 2026.
  1. Is the operator licensed where you and your friend live? If not, skip it.
  2. What form is the reward? Cash, bonus credit or a free bet with stake not returned?
  3. What must your friend deposit and bet, and by when?
  4. What are the expiry, cap and wagering on your reward?
  5. Would you still send it with no reward? If the answer is no, don’t send it.

Is a refer-a-friend bonus worth it?

For your friend, it works like a small welcome bonus, with the usual strings attached. For you, it’s restricted credit, worth less than the headline and gone within 7 to 30 days. Our are casino bonuses worth it test applies here too.

Takeaway: worth taking only if you’d both play anyway. Never worth recruiting someone for.

FAQ

Is a casino referral bonus paid in cash?

Rarely. In the four licensed terms we read on 29 Oct 2026, every reward was a free bet, bonus bet or bonus credit. None could be withdrawn as cash, though winnings from them sometimes can.

Do refer-a-friend bonuses have wagering requirements?

Some do. BetMGM’s casino referral bonus carried a 1x playthrough. Free bets usually don’t have a wagering multiple, but the stake isn’t returned, which cuts their value.

Can I refer someone in my household?

Often not. Unibet’s general terms limit promotions to once per IP, device, family and address. Caesars treats accounts linked by device, IP, cashier or location as possible abuse.

Is refer a friend allowed everywhere?

No. New South Wales prohibits inducements to refer friends to open betting accounts. Ontario bans public advertising of bonuses, including through player referrals.

How much does a referral bonus cost the casino?

In our illustrative example, RM200 of rewards against an expected RM3.50 loss on the friend’s first RM100 slot bet. The operator only profits once the friend loses far more later.
