To block gambling properly, switch on three locks tonight: a blocking app on every device, a gambling block on your bank card, and your country’s self-exclusion register. One lock leaves gaps. Three locks cover each other. This guide shows which schemes exist in Singapore, the Philippines, Macau, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the UK and Australia, how hard each one is to undo, and a 30-minute plan you can finish before bed.

The aim is simple. Make it hard for 2am-you to undo what tonight-you decided.

How to block gambling in 30 minutes: five steps — device block, bank block, self-exclusion, tell one person, save a helpline
Source: official scheme pages (NCPG, PAGCOR, DICJ, GAMSTOP, BetStop, BetBlocker), checked 20 Oct 2026. Illustration by HotStakes.

Why three blocks beat one

Each type of block stops a different door. None stops all of them.

  • Device block (app): stops gambling websites and apps from loading on your phone or laptop. It is the only layer that reaches offshore sites that ignore national registers.
  • Bank block: declines card payments to merchants coded as gambling. It works even if you borrow someone’s laptop.
  • Self-exclusion register: bars you from licensed casinos and licensed online operators. They must refuse you, even if you walk in or sign up again.

The gap matters most in Asia. Self-exclusion only binds licensed operators, and many sites marketed to Asian players are not licensed where you live. If you are not sure which kind you have been using, our guide on how to spot an unlicensed online casino walks through the checks.

Quick take: A register blocks licensed venues. A bank block blocks card payments. An app blocks the sites. Use all three, because each one fails where another one works.

Self-exclusion schemes by country

On 20 Oct 2026 we opened the official page for every scheme below and noted what it covers, how long it lasts, and whether you can cancel it early. Here is what we found.

Country Scheme What it blocks Length Undo early? How to apply
Singapore NCPG Self-Exclusion (also Family Exclusion Order) Both casinos, jackpot rooms in private clubs, Singapore Pools online betting Until revoked Only after at least 1 year Online with Singpass, age 21+
Philippines PAGCOR self-exclusion / family exclusion All PAGCOR-licensed and PAGCOR-operated sites 6 months, 1 year or 5 years (family: up to 3 years) No — first 6 months irrevocable Form, ID and photos by email or in person (Pasay City)
Macau DICJ self-exclusion / third-party exclusion All or some casinos Up to 2 years Yes — revocation can be requested any time DICJ office or self-service kiosks, age 21+
Malaysia No national register found Resorts World Genting runs its own casino scheme Permanent, or 7-day cooling-off Permanent: review after 6 months Genting Responsible Gaming hotline or desk
Hong Kong No national register found — — — Ask your betting account provider; call 1834 633 for help
UK GAMSTOP All online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, or 5 years auto-renew No Free online, UK residents
Australia BetStop All licensed online and phone wagering providers 3 months to lifetime Can’t shorten; removal only after 3 months with a counsellor’s sign-off Free online, about 5 minutes

Singapore: NCPG self-exclusion

Singapore’s NCPG self-exclusion is applied for online with Singpass, from age 21. It covers the casinos at Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands, jackpot machine rooms at private clubs, and Singapore Pools online betting. An existing Pools account loses account services; if you have none, you can’t open one.

It takes effect immediately on submission. You must stay excluded for at least one year before you can apply to revoke it.

Families can apply for a Family Exclusion Order. Spouses, children, parents and siblings qualify. A Committee of Assessors hears the case, usually about two weeks after the application. In urgent cases NCPG can issue a provisional order while the case is pending.

Takeaway: Singapore’s scheme covers both land casinos and the legal online channel in one form.

Philippines: PAGCOR exclusion

PAGCOR’s exclusion page offers self-exclusion for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years, and family exclusion for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years. Both lift automatically at the end. PAGCOR states: “A self exclusion/banning period for the first six (6) months is irrevocable.”

You need the form, a government photo ID and two 2×2 photos. Send them by email or drop them at the MET Live Building in Pasay City. PAGCOR’s responsible gaming page also links an online “Request for Self-Exclusion” portal; it did not load for us on 20 Oct 2026, so the email route is the safe bet.

Demand is high. PAGCOR’s chairman said there were 33,800 active exclusions as of 30 Sep 2026 — 32,890 of them self-exclusions and 793 family-initiated — according to Focus Gaming News. The same report says exclusion covers licensed online platforms too.

Takeaway: Pick at least 1 year. The first 6 months can’t be cancelled, which is the point.

Macau: DICJ exclusion

Macau’s gaming regulator, the DICJ, can bar a person from all or some casinos for up to two years, according to the official Macao government service page. Anyone over 21 can self-exclude. A spouse, parent, child or sibling can apply too, but the person excluded must sign to confirm.

You can apply at the DICJ office or at self-service kiosks in casinos, slot lounges and Social Welfare Bureau centres. Tourists can use them too.

One catch: the excluded person can request revocation at any time. That makes Macau’s lock the easiest to undo of the schemes we checked.

Takeaway: In Macau, pair the exclusion with an app block and a person who knows, because the exclusion itself can be withdrawn.

Malaysia and Hong Kong: what we could not find

We searched on 20 Oct 2026 and found no national self-exclusion register in Malaysia, for land or online gambling. What exists is venue-level. Resorts World Genting offers a permanent self-exclusion (revocation reviewed only after six months) and a 7-day cooling-off, via its hotline +603 6105 9557.

For Hong Kong we also found no national register. The government-funded counselling hotline 1834 633 is the starting point, per a government reply to LegCo. If you hold a betting account, ask the provider what account controls it offers.

Takeaway: In Malaysia and Hong Kong, device and bank blocks carry most of the weight. Do those first.

UK: GAMSTOP, and Australia: BetStop

GAMSTOP is free for UK residents. Every online gambling company licensed in Great Britain must check it when you register or log in, GAMSTOP says. Terms run 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, or 5 years with auto-renewal. Per its about page, “you cannot cancel your registration during the exclusion period.” High-street bookmakers have a separate scheme on 0800 294 2060.

Australia’s BetStop covers all licensed online and phone wagering providers, about 150 of them. It is free and runs from 3 months to a lifetime. You can’t shorten it. Removal needs a statutory declaration that you’ve had counselling, can’t start in the first 3 months, and takes 7 days. Registered people also stop receiving gambling marketing. The ACMA reported more than 28,000 sign-ups in the first year, almost half aged 30 and under.

Takeaway: GAMSTOP and BetStop are the strongest locks we checked. Neither covers sites that are not licensed locally.

How hard is each block to undo?

Most guides list schemes. Few ask the question that decides whether they work: what happens when you change your mind at 2am?

We ranked every tool we checked by how hard it is to reverse, using only what the official pages say.

How to block gambling for good: lock strength ladder comparing GAMSTOP, NCPG, BetStop, PAGCOR, Monzo, UK bank blocks and Macau self-exclusion
HotStakes check of official scheme pages, 20 Oct 2026. Illustration by HotStakes.
  • Hardest: GAMSTOP (no cancellation in term), NCPG (1 year minimum), BetStop (counsellor’s sign-off plus 7 days).
  • Middle: PAGCOR (first 6 months locked), BetBlocker (fixed periods can’t be lifted early), Monzo (cooldown you choose, 2 days to 1 year).
  • Softest: most UK bank blocks (48 to 72 hours to switch off) and Macau (revocation can be requested any time).

Takeaway: When a scheme lets you choose, choose the longest term you can face. The delay is the protection.

Bank gambling blocks

A bank gambling block declines card payments to merchants that carry the gambling category code. In the UK it is a switch in your banking app. GamCare lists about 20 UK banks and e-wallets that offer one, free.

  • Monzo: you choose a cooldown of 2 days to 1 year when you switch it on, and can’t change it until it passes (Monzo).
  • Starling: the switch sits in the app’s Security section and blocks card payments to most gambling merchants; GamCare lists a 48-hour cooling-off to remove it (Starling).
  • Others: GamCare lists 48 hours for banks such as Lloyds, NatWest, Santander and Revolut, and 72 hours for Barclays, HSBC and Nationwide.

Outside the UK, this switch is rarer. Our 20 Oct 2026 search did not find a published gambling-merchant toggle at Singapore’s large banks. So call your bank and ask three things: can you block gambling merchants, lower your daily card and transfer limits, and switch off online or overseas card use. Then delete saved cards from your browser and wallet apps.

Regulators are also cutting payment routes. In December 2025 PAGCOR said it had banned credit cards and crypto for betting and was delinking e-wallets.

Card codes miss things. Transfers, crypto and e-wallet top-ups can slip through, which is why the bank block is one layer, not the plan. If an offshore site is still holding a withdrawal, read our KYC withdrawal hold explainer before you send it any more money.

Takeaway: Switch the block on, then lower your limits. Friction is the goal.

Device blocking apps

Blocking apps stop gambling sites and apps from opening. They are the only layer that reaches offshore sites.

  • BetBlocker: free, ad-free, blocks over 1.2 million sites and 3,100+ apps. Runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. You pick a period from 1 day to 5 years, and it can’t be lifted before the end.
  • Gamban: paid. Its pricing page shows US$6.99 a month or US$41.99 a year after a 7-day trial. Free UK access through TalkBanStop ended on 31 March 2026; it is no longer free in England and Scotland but stays free in Wales, Gamban says.

One regional note: Gamban has been unavailable in India’s app stores since February 2023 under a government blocking order, MediaNama reported in May 2026. Check your store before you rely on any single app.

Takeaway: Install a blocker on every device you own, including the old tablet in the drawer.

Block it in 30 minutes tonight

Do these in order. Each step makes the next one easier.

  1. Device block (10 minutes). Install BetBlocker or another blocker on your phone and laptop. Choose the longest period you can face — at least 3 months.
  2. Bank block (5 minutes). Switch on your bank’s gambling block. If there isn’t one, lower card limits, turn off online card use, and remove saved cards.
  3. Self-exclude (10 minutes). Register with your country’s scheme from the table above. Pick at least 1 year.
  4. Tell one person (5 minutes). A short message is enough. Ask them to check in, not to police you.
  5. Save a helpline. Put your country’s number from the list below in your phone now, before you need it.

EXAMPLE message (adapt it): “I’ve blocked gambling on my phone and bank tonight. Can you check in with me on Sunday? I’m not asking you to fix it, just to know.”

If a casino host or marketer still messages you, block that number too. Our explainer on how casino VIP hosts work shows why that contact is designed to bring players back.

Takeaway: Thirty minutes tonight buys you months of distance from the next bad night.

Helplines by country

Every number below was confirmed on an official or government-linked page on 20 Oct 2026. Where we found no dedicated gambling line, we list a general mental-health line and say so.

Gambling helplines by country to call after you block gambling: Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Macau, Hong Kong, India, UK, Australia

UK National Gambling Helpline (24/7) 0808 8020 133 GamCare
Australia National Gambling Helpline 1800 858 858 ACMA

Talian HEAL runs daily from 8am to midnight, per the Health Ministry figures reported by The Star. The Philippine helpline says it is not a crisis service. If you are in danger, call your local emergency number.

Takeaway: Save the number now. Calling is easier when it’s already in your phone.

If you’re the family member

You can’t install a blocker on someone else’s phone for them, and you shouldn’t try. You can apply for family exclusion in Singapore, the Philippines and Macau, using the routes above. In Macau the person must still sign to confirm.

Takeaway: Protect your own money first, then offer the 30-minute plan when they’re ready.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to block gambling?

Install a free blocking app such as BetBlocker on every device and switch on your bank’s gambling block. Both take minutes. Then register with your country’s self-exclusion scheme.

Does self-exclusion block offshore gambling sites?

No. Self-exclusion only binds operators licensed in that country. A device blocking app is the only layer that reaches sites licensed elsewhere.

Can I cancel self-exclusion early?

It depends on the scheme. GAMSTOP can’t be cancelled during the term, NCPG needs at least 1 year, and PAGCOR’s first 6 months are irrevocable. Macau allows revocation to be requested at any time.

Is there a self-exclusion scheme in Malaysia?

We found no national register as of 20 Oct 2026. Resorts World Genting runs its own permanent and 7-day exclusion. Use device and bank blocks, and Talian HEAL 15555 for support.

Can my family exclude me from casinos?

Yes in Singapore (Family Exclusion Order), the Philippines (family exclusion) and Macau (third-party exclusion). Each scheme lists which relatives qualify.

Not sure you need blocks? Take the 2-minute self-check first.
